A placement test for adult language learners, built in 30 minutes with AI
Placement decides everything that follows: the objective, the length, the quote. Here is a short three-part method for an adult who learns a language for work.
In brief
An effective placement test combines three parts: a short graded test (A1 to C1) built on the learner's work vocabulary, a ten-to-fifteen-minute speaking exchange assessed with a CEFR rubric, and an interview about the situations where they use the language. AI can draft the test in minutes; the trainer checks it and decides the level.
1. The graded test
Twenty to thirty items, from easiest to hardest, taken from the learner's situation: an email to complete, a voicemail to understand, a sentence to rephrase. Grading lets you stop when the learner drops off — that is often where their level is.
2. The speaking exchange
Ten to fifteen minutes: introduce themselves, describe their job, then a short scenario ("a client calls, the order hasn't arrived"). Assess it with the same criteria as your speaking rubric, so the starting point is directly comparable with the end-of-course assessment.
3. The needs interview
Who does the learner speak to, through which channel, about what, and what goes wrong today? The answers set the operational objective ("run a supplier meeting in English by June") that goes into the programme and the quote.
A starter prompt
Create a 24-question English placement test for an adult who works as [job]. Grade the questions from A1 to C1 (4 per level, label each one), use situations from their work (emails, calls, meetings), and mix reading, grammar in context and professional vocabulary. Give the answer key separately.
The complete placement — test, recorded speaking exchange, needs analysis and the learning path that follows — is the first deliverable of the RS7208 certification, built on one of your own learners.
Frequently asked questions
What is a placement test for?
To place the learner on the CEFR scale before the course, so you can set a realistic objective, a length and a content. In French continuing education it is also expected by Qualiopi: the analysis of needs and starting level, before the course is designed.
Is a generic online test enough?
It gives a quick estimate of reading and grammar, but says nothing about speaking or the learner's work situation. A sound placement combines a short test, a speaking exchange and an interview about where the learner uses the language.
How long should placement take?
Thirty to forty-five minutes in all: about fifteen minutes of written or online test, ten to fifteen minutes of speaking, and the rest for the needs interview.
Can AI build the test?
Yes, the first draft: AI quickly writes items graded from A1 to C1 using the learner's work vocabulary. The trainer checks every item, removes ambiguities and keeps control of the speaking exchange, which decides the final level.
