TEFL, CELTA or a French certification: what is actually recognised in France
If you teach English in France, the question is not which course is best in the abstract. It is which certificate an employer, a training organisation or the CPF will accept. Here is the answer, with the registration codes to check it.
In brief
TEFL is not recognised by the French state: no TEFL certificate is registered with France Compétences, so it cannot be funded by the CPF. CELTA is recognised (RS6547, Cambridge, valid until 27 March 2027), English only, about 120 hours. What "recognised in France" means
France has an official register of qualifications, run by France Compétences. Two lists matter for trainers: the RNCP (whole professions) and the Répertoire Spécifique, RS (specific skills). A certificate on one of these lists has a code, a named certifier and an end date. Anyone can check it. That is what "recognised" means in practice: a training organisation can quote it in its Qualiopi file, a company can justify paying for it, and you can fund it with your CPF. Everything else, however good the course, is a private certificate.
TEFL: useful abroad, invisible to the French system
"TEFL" is a family of courses, not a single qualification. None of the providers is registered with France Compétences. In France that has three consequences: no CPF funding, no weight in a Qualiopi audit, and a hiring manager who cannot verify it. It does not mean the course was useless: the classroom skills are real. It means you will usually need something else on top to work in continuing education here.
CELTA: recognised, English only, long
Cambridge registered CELTA in the Répertoire Spécifique (RS6547, "Enseigner l'anglais (CELTA)"). The registration is active and runs to 27 March 2027, which makes CELTA CPF-eligible for now. It is a strong general teaching qualification: about 120 hours, observed practice, a recognised name worldwide. Its limits in the French adult-training market: English only, no AI, no coverage of the French system (CPF, OPCO, Qualiopi), and a format designed for teaching rather than for the freelance trainer who sells hours to companies.
LangueXpert (RS7208): recognised, every language, AI at the centre
"Former de manière innovante en langues vivantes" is registered as RS7208. It certifies trainers who already work with adults, in any modern language, on their ability to design and run a course with AI: needs analysis, personalised blueprint, lesson plans, resources, evaluation, blended delivery. Eighteen hours over about two months, built on one of your real learners, then an individual session and a jury of practising trainers. Sessions run in French and in English. It is CPF-fundable, and training organisations can use their OPCO.
It is not a substitute for CELTA if you have never taught: LangueXpert assumes you already have learners. It is the certification you take once you are teaching in France and need a title the system recognises.

Which one, in your situation

Is TEFL recognised in France?
Not officially. No TEFL certificate is registered with France Compétences, the body that lists the qualifications recognised by the French state. Employers can still value it, but it cannot be funded by the CPF and does not count as a registered certification in a Qualiopi audit.
Is CELTA recognised in France?
Yes. CELTA is registered in the Répertoire Spécifique as RS6547, "Enseigner l'anglais (CELTA)", certifier Cambridge Assessment Overseas Ltd, currently valid until 27 March 2027. It is eligible for CPF funding.
Can I use my CPF to pay for TEFL or CELTA?

Do I need a certification to teach English in France?
